Re-Elect State Rep. Hughes

It's an easy decision for this newspaper to endorse the re-election of State Rep. Bryan Hughes as our legislator in Austin. Simply put, he has done an outstanding job in the Texas House of Representatives.

With only a few exceptions, he has made sure that his votes on important issues reflect the thinking of the majority of the East Texans who elected him almost 2 years ago. At that time, the Republican attorney from Mineola defeated Dr. Bob Glaze of Gilmer. Dr. Glaze, a Democrat, had served 12 years in the Legislature and again this year is Hughes' opponent.

Both are good men, but the ideological gap between them is enormous:

--Glaze's record in Austin was 1 of an old-time Texas Democrat--tilting liberal, going along with the "good ole boys," and favoring government expansion.

--Hughes' record in the Legislature is just the opposite--a conservative who is against big government and for more fiscal and moral responsibility.

Since he took office, Rep. Hughes has kept the people of his district--Wood, Upshur, Camp and Harrison counties--fully informed of his legislative actions. He has traveled frequently throughout his district, meeting often with the people he represents. When he has made a controversial vote (such as on the initial redistricting issue), he has explained to the people why he voted as he did. And when he believed he made a mistake, he has admitted it.

Rep. Hughes is a fine representative, both personally and politically, of the people of our district. We are proud to endorse his re-election.
